Definition

Retopology is the process of building a new, clean, low-polygon mesh on top of a dense high-poly sculpt. The result is a model with consistent quad-based topology suitable for animation, UV unwrapping, and game-engine import. Retopology is the bridge between sculpting (where polycount is irrelevant) and production (where every triangle counts).

In production

ZBrush's ZRemesher and Blender's QuadRemesher addon automate retopology and work well for props and creature bodies. Hero characters and faces almost always require manual retopology — guided edge loops are still beyond AI tools, since ZRemesher has no concept of where a jaw hinge or eyelid crease needs to sit for animation. Maya's Quad Draw and 3ds Max's Graphite modeling tools are the standard manual retopo toolsets in AAA character pipelines, letting artists draw new topology directly on the high-poly surface with snapping enabled. A typical hero face retopo runs 3,000-8,000 triangles depending on target engine, with denser loops reserved for the eyes and mouth where blend shapes and joint deformation are heaviest. One common mistake is retopologizing before finalizing the sculpt — any late change to the high-poly invalidates edge flow that was hand-placed to match the old proportions, forcing a partial re-retopo rather than a simple re-bake.
