3DCoat

All-in-one digital sculpting, retopology, UV mapping, and hand-painted texturing application. Excels at voxel-based sculpting for organic shapes, auto-retopology tools, and stylized hand-painted texture workflows popular in mobile and indie game art. Features a built-in PBR painting mode and smart materials. A versatile and affordable alternative to combining ZBrush with Substance Painter.

Best For

Voxel sculpting combined with manual retopology and UV projection — an integrated pipeline for taking a rough sculpt to a game-ready asset without leaving one application.

Primary Use Cases

  • - Hand-painting stylized textures directly onto 3D mesh surfaces in the texture painting room
  • - Retopologizing high-poly sculpted meshes using the dedicated Retopo room with smart stroke tools
  • - UV unwrapping immediately after retopology in the same application without intermediate export
  • - Voxel sculpting organic shapes where traditional polygon-based sculpting workflows are impractical
  • - Painting per-vertex color on low-poly assets for vertex color workflows in stylized mobile games

Pros & Cons for Game Art

Pros

  • + Sculpt, retopology, UV, bake, and texture paint are all in one application — fewer tool-switching interruptions in the workflow
  • + Retopology tools are among the best available — faster and more intuitive than Maya's or Blender's for manual retopo work
  • + Perpetual license with a one-time purchase is significantly more affordable than ZBrush or the Adobe suite
  • + Excellent stylized texture painting tools with a strong brush engine suited to hand-painted game art styles
  • + Vertex color painting is well-implemented — good for stylized and mobile game art that relies on vertex color workflows

Cons

  • − Interface is dense and non-standard — the room-based paradigm takes time to learn and feels less polished than ZBrush or Blender
  • − High-poly sculpting quality and brush feel are significantly below ZBrush for detailed organic character work
  • − Smaller community than ZBrush or Blender — fewer tutorials, fewer custom brushes, less forum support
  • − PBR texturing capabilities are solid but lag behind Substance Painter's smart material and generator system for realistic workflows

Suggested Learning Path

  1. 1.Import a high-poly mesh and navigate the 3DCoat room system — Sculpt, Retopo, UV, and Paint rooms each serve distinct pipeline stages
  2. 2.Practice the Retopo Room — use the Strokes, Quads, and Tweak tools to build clean topology over an imported high-poly mesh
  3. 3.Learn the UV Room to unwrap your retopologized mesh, pack UV islands, and check for seam placement
  4. 4.Use the Bake function to transfer high-poly surface detail onto the new low-poly mesh as normal and AO maps
  5. 5.Paint directly in the Paint Room using stylized brushes, then export texture maps for UE5 or Blender

Quick Tip

In the Retopo Room, use the "Strokes" tool with "Relax" enabled — click along a surface and it places edge loops that automatically conform to the high-poly curvature. Combine this with "Tweak" mode to interactively push vertices into optimal positions, cutting manual retopology time significantly.

Setup Notes

  • - Set your Painting Room resolution to 2K or 4K in the New Project dialog before starting — the resolution is fixed after creation and cannot be changed without starting over
  • - Enable "Freeze by Materials" in the Retopo Room when working on multi-material characters — it prevents accidental polygon placement that bleeds across material boundaries
  • - Install the free 3DCoat to Blender bridge add-on for Blender — it creates a live-link connection that sends meshes back and forth at the press of a button
  • - Use "Smart Retopology" (Auto-retopology) for initial blockout, then switch to manual tools for edge flow refinement around joints and feature areas

How N-hance Uses It

N-hance School uses 3DCoat as the primary retopology and UV tool in its Stylized Texturing for Games course pipeline — students bring sculpted or downloaded high-poly meshes into 3DCoat for manual retopo, UV layout, and stylized hand-painting before exporting finished texture maps to Blender for portfolio renders.
