Definition

A high-poly model is the detailed source mesh — typically millions of polygons created in ZBrush — that holds all the surface detail you want to appear in the final asset. The high-poly is never imported into the engine; instead, its details are baked into normal, AO, curvature, and other maps applied to a much lighter low-poly counterpart.

In production

A game character's high-poly is typically sculpted in ZBrush starting from a base mesh, then pushed through several subdivision levels — DynaMesh or ZRemesher passes for blocking, followed by 6-8 rounds of Subdivide to reach tens of millions of polygons for fine pore and fabric-weave detail. Because the high-poly exists purely to be baked, it's common to sculpt separate pieces (armor plates, straps, undersuit) as overlapping, intersecting meshes without worrying about clean boundary topology — something that would be unacceptable in a low-poly. Studios export the high-poly at a reduced but still dense decimated resolution (via ZBrush's Decimation Master or Simplygon) before handing it to Marmoset Toolbag or Substance Painter for baking, since a raw 20-million-triangle mesh can be too heavy for the baker to load directly. A common mistake is deleting or losing the high-poly source file after baking — if a later revision needs a new bake pass, the entire sculpt has to be redone from scratch.
