SubTool

Separate mesh inside a ZBrush project

Also known as: ZBrush SubTool · ZBrush subtools · ZBrush merge subtools · ZBrush SubTool palette · ZBrush multiple meshes

Definition

A SubTool is one separate mesh inside a ZBrush tool, listed in the SubTool palette. A character, for example, can be a body, a head, eyes, armor pieces and clothes, each its own SubTool with its own polygon count and subdivision levels. You can show or hide, duplicate, mirror, merge and split SubTools, and sculpt on only the selected one, which keeps the project organized and the polygon load manageable.

In production

Split a sculpt into SubTools by part, such as head, arms and armor, so you can work on high resolution where you need it. Name them clearly and group them with folders. Merge SubTools when you want to remesh them together, and use Split to separate by polygroups or hidden parts later. Keep an eye on the total polygon count of visible SubTools, since it affects performance and file size.
