ZRemesher
ZBrush auto-retopology
Definition
ZRemesher is ZBrush's automatic retopology tool. It analyses a dense sculpt and produces a quad-based mesh with configurable polygon target and edge-flow guidance. ZRemesher 2024 produces production-quality topology for most organic forms when paired with manual polypaint guide curves to direct flow.

Set a target polycount (a good starting point is roughly matching the intended in-game budget, e.g. 15-30k tris for a hero character), paint optional flow guides directly on the sculpt with polypaint in a contrasting color, then run ZRemesher and inspect the output for joints and deforming areas — these almost always need manual cleanup before rigging. The "Keep Groups" toggle preserves ZBrush polygroup borders as hard edges in the new topology, useful for maintaining UV seams that were already planned around those groups. ZRemesher frequently mishandles topology around fingers, ears, and eyelids, producing pinched poles or n-gons that must be fixed by hand in Maya or Blender's edge-loop tools before the mesh is rig-ready. Some studios skip ZRemesher entirely for hero characters and hand-retopologize in TopoGun or Blender instead, reserving ZRemesher for background props where perfect edge flow isn't worth the art time.
