Character Topology

Edge flow that supports deformation

Also known as: Face topology · Edge flow character · Facial loops · Joint topology · Character retopology · Good topology for animation

Definition

Character topology is the layout of edges and polygons on a character, designed to support animation and shading. Good character topology uses mostly quads, follows the muscles and the forms of the body, and places concentric edge loops around the eyes and mouth, and several loops around joints such as the shoulders, elbows and knees, so they can bend without collapsing. Density is highest where the surface deforms or has detail, and lower on flat areas.

In production

Plan the topology around the rig and the facial expressions, and test it with a quick pose and blend shapes before baking details. Avoid triangles and poles in areas that deform, or place them where they hide. In games the budget limits how many loops are possible, so keep important loops and cut the rest. A base mesh or a retopology tool such as Quad Draw or ZRemesher helps create a first version.
