Definition
An edge loop is a continuous chain of edges around a mesh, ideally returning to itself in a closed loop. Edge loops define where deformation will fold — placing a loop around an elbow joint means the elbow bends along that loop. Good character topology has loops following anatomical features: muscles, mouth, eye sockets, finger joints.
In production
Character artists lay edge loops by hand in Maya or Blender using the multi-cut and loop-cut tools, following the classic "loop chart" reference: concentric loops around the eyes and mouth for FACS-style facial rigs, a loop ringing the elbow and knee for bend deformation, and radial loops around the deltoid for shoulder rotation. A missing loop at a joint is one of the most common rigging bugs — without a loop positioned at the bend axis, the mesh has nothing to fold along and produces a collapsed, faceted crease instead of a smooth bend when the joint rotates past roughly 45 degrees. ZBrush sculptors often block forms with DynaMesh first, ignoring loops entirely, then run ZRemesher with polypaint guide curves to force clean loops back in before the model goes to rigging. Retopology tools like Blender's poly-build or dedicated apps like TopoGun exist specifically to trace edge loops manually over a high-poly sculpt when automatic retopo fails to place them correctly, which happens often around fingers and ears.
