Voxel Remesh

Rebuilds a sculpt with even polygons

Also known as: Blender voxel remesh · Blender remesh · Blender Ctrl R sculpt · Blender voxel size · Blender dyntopo

Definition

Voxel Remesh rebuilds a sculpted mesh into evenly sized quad-based polygons, which gives uniform detail and removes stretched or overlapping geometry. In Blender's Sculpt Mode you set a Voxel Size and press Remesh or Ctrl+R, and a smaller voxel size gives more polygons and more detail. It is a quick way to start a sculpt from a rough base and to repair a mesh after heavy stretching.

In production

Remesh at a low voxel size to block out the form, and remesh again at a higher resolution as you add detail. It replaces the topology, so UVs, vertex groups and shape keys are lost, which makes it an early-stage tool. For production, retopologize afterwards to get clean edge flow for animation and game use. Dyntopo is the alternative that adds detail only where you sculpt.
