Multires Modifier
Sculpt at several subdivision levels
Also known as: Blender Multires · Blender multiresolution · Blender sculpt subdivision levels · Multires bake
Definition
The Multiresolution, or Multires, modifier subdivides a mesh into several levels and lets you sculpt on each of them, so you can block out big forms on a low level and add fine detail on a high one while the base mesh stays intact. You can switch levels at any time and the edits on the lower levels carry up. It is a classic way to sculpt in Blender and to prepare a high-poly for baking.
In production
Subdivide with the Subdivide button, which keeps the sculpt, rather than adding levels with a Subdivision Surface modifier. Do the main shapes on low levels and details on the top. For a game asset, bake the high-poly detail into a normal map on a low-poly retopologized mesh. Multires cannot change topology after sculpting, so use Dyntopo or Voxel Remesh when you need to add geometry freely.
