Technical Artist
Bridge between art and engineering
Also known as: Tech Artist · TA · Technical Art · Tech art
Definition
A technical artist is a specialist who connects artists and programmers, solving problems with shaders, tools, rigs and performance so that artwork works well in the engine. They write shaders and material systems, build Python or Blueprint tools, set up asset pipelines and optimize scenes. Technical art suits people who like both art and problem solving, and the role is in demand because few artists have the technical depth.
In production
Common tasks are building master materials, automating import and naming checks, profiling scenes, setting LOD and texture budgets, and fixing assets that break in the engine. An environment or character artist who learns shaders, a scripting language such as Python and profiling tools can grow into the role. Studios often hire technical artists on portfolios that show tools, shaders and optimization as well as finished art.
