Blueprint
Unreal Engine visual scripting
Also known as: Unreal Blueprints · BP · Blueprint class · Visual scripting
Definition
Blueprint is Unreal Engine's visual scripting system, where logic is built by connecting nodes instead of writing code. A Blueprint class can bundle meshes, lights, collision and behavior into one reusable object, such as a door that opens or a torch that flickers, and it uses the BP_ prefix. Artists use Blueprints to set up interactive props, material changes and simple effects without a programmer.
In production
Make an asset a Blueprint when it needs components or behavior: a prop with a collision box, a light and a particle effect, or a mesh that swaps materials. Keep logic simple and leave performance-critical systems to programmers, since Blueprints run slower than native code for heavy work. Name them with the BP_ prefix and keep them near the meshes they use so the project stays organized as it grows.
