Material Function

Reusable node graph for materials

Also known as: MF · Material Function · Reusable material nodes

Definition

A Material Function is a reusable network of material nodes in Unreal Engine that you build once and call from many materials, like a subroutine. It has defined inputs and outputs, and when you edit the function every material that uses it updates. Typical functions handle world-aligned texturing, snow or moss coverage, tiling breakup and detail normals. Functions keep large materials readable and stop the same nodes being copied into every graph.

In production

Put anything you would copy between materials into a function and call it from your master material. Give inputs sensible defaults so the node works out of the box, expose parameters on the calling material rather than inside the function, and prefix the asset MF_ by team convention. Because every dependent material recompiles when a function changes, edit shared functions deliberately and test the change on a simple material first.
