  1. 1.Understand the node-based procedural paradigm — every operation is a node, and the graph is the asset
  2. 2.Build a simple rigid body destruction sim using Voronoi fracture and RBD Material Fracture
  3. 3.Study volume and fluid workflows — create a basic pyro fire sim and cache it to VDB for Blender or UE5 import
  4. 4.Learn Houdini Engine — package a procedural rock generator as an HDA and load it inside UE5 for scene use
  5. 5.Create a complete VFX shot: sim, render with Karma, and composite passes in Nuke or After Effects

  • - Set your Cache directory to a fast NVMe drive in Houdini Preferences — VDB and particle caches grow into hundreds of gigabytes quickly and caching to a slow HDD will stall your viewport
  • - Use the SideFX Labs plugin (free, separate download) — it adds dozens of game-art-specific tools including texture baking, mesh cleanup, and map export not in the base install
  • - Always work with floating-point geometry caches (bgeo.sc format) during simulation — convert to Alembic or FBX only at export to preserve maximum precision throughout the sim
  • - Enable the Houdini Engine plugin in UE5 and connect it to your Houdini install path so HDA assets update live in the editor when you modify the Houdini graph
