Houdini Engine
Run Houdini tools inside Unreal and Unity
Also known as: Houdini Engine Unreal · Houdini Engine Unity · Houdini plugin · HDA in Unreal · Houdini Engine Maya
Definition
Houdini Engine is a plugin that lets other programs, including Unreal Engine, Unity, Maya and 3ds Max, run Houdini's procedural tools inside them. Artists load a Houdini Digital Asset, adjust its parameters in the other program's interface, and Houdini Engine cooks the result in the background as geometry in the scene. It brings the power of procedural generation to level and environment artists without needing the full Houdini application on every machine.
In production
Use it to run HDAs that scatter props, build roads, generate buildings or simulate effects directly in the level, and bake the results into normal assets when they are final. It needs a Houdini license and the matching plugin version for your engine, so keep versions aligned across the team. For lighter needs, Unreal's own PCG framework and Blender's Geometry Nodes offer similar procedural workflows.
