Match by Mesh Name
Bake setting that pairs low and high poly parts
Also known as: Painter bake match · By Mesh Name · Painter low high naming · _low _high suffix · Painter bake by name
Definition
Match by Mesh Name is a baking option in Substance Painter that pairs each low-poly part with the high-poly part that has the same name. Name the parts with the same base name and suffixes, such as barrel_low and barrel_high, and Painter bakes each pair separately, so a part never picks up details from a neighbouring object. The alternative, Always, uses the whole high-poly for every low-poly part.
In production
Use it for any asset made of several parts, such as a weapon or a prop with separate pieces, or when parts overlap. Check that the names match exactly, because a typo makes a part bake empty. It removes most projection errors without needing an exploded mesh. Parts with the same name must also share the same position and orientation in space, so apply transforms before baking.
