Texture Set

One material's worth of textures in Painter

Also known as: Texture Set Substance Painter · Material ID · Texture set list

Definition

A texture set in Substance Painter is a group of textures for one material on a model, matching one material or material ID in the mesh you imported. Each set has its own resolution, mesh map bakes, layer stack and exported maps. A model with three materials becomes three texture sets, and settings such as resolution and baking are chosen per set.

In production

Assign materials in your 3D tool before export, because each material name becomes a texture set in Painter. Fewer sets mean fewer materials and draw calls in the engine, so combine parts that can share one material, and give small props a single set. Check resolution and bake settings per set, since a hero part can use 4K while a background part uses 1K.
