Substance Designer Slow Graph

The graph takes too long to update

Also known as: Designer slow · Substance Designer lag · Designer graph performance · Substance Designer cook time · Designer resolution low · Designer freezing

Quick answer

A slow Substance Designer graph is usually computing at a resolution that is too high for the number of nodes. Lower the graph's output size to 512 or 256 while you build and raise it for the final export, and avoid very heavy nodes such as large blurs, many Tile Samplers and Pixel Processors at high resolution. Close the 3D view when you do not need it, and keep other GPU programs closed.

How to fix it

Group heavy parts of the graph into sub-graphs and check their cost, and use the lowest quality settings on nodes during the build. A Tile Sampler with a very high pattern count and a Pixel Processor are the typical causes of slowness. Build the structure at a small size, then raise it to see if details hold. Use the Cook button or the Substance Launcher's logs to see where time goes.
