Silhouette
The readable outline of a shape
Also known as: Silhouette test · Shape readability · Readable shape
Definition
A silhouette is the outline of an object or character when filled with a single flat color. A strong silhouette is recognizable and unique even without detail, color or lighting, which matters in games where characters and props are seen small, at a distance and in motion. Stylized artists design the silhouette first and add detail afterwards, and a silhouette test is a standard check during concept and blockout.
In production
Fill the model with black or one flat color against a light background and view it at the size players will see it. Check that you can tell characters, weapons and props apart, and that important parts, such as a weapon in a hand, do not merge with the body. In 3D, check silhouettes from the game camera angles, not only from the front. Changing proportion, exaggerating shapes and breaking the outline with distinct forms usually improves it more than adding detail.
