Grease Pencil
Blender's 2D drawing and animation in 3D space
Also known as: Blender Grease Pencil · Blender 2D animation · Blender 2D drawing · Blender Grease Pencil 3
Definition
Grease Pencil is Blender's toolset for drawing and animating 2D strokes inside a 3D scene. Drawings are stored as strokes on layers and frames, with their own materials and effects, so you can combine hand-drawn characters, storyboards and line art with 3D models and cameras. Blender 4.3 rebuilt Grease Pencil with a new system, so features and file compatibility differ between older and newer versions.
In production
Use it for storyboards, 2D animation, stylized effects, concept sketches over 3D blockouts and line-art overlays on a render. Draw on a plane facing the camera, or onto the 3D surface of a model. Strokes can be baked from a mesh with the Line Art modifier. For game art it is mostly a concept and previs tool, but it is a strong way to explore silhouettes before modeling.
