SBSAR

Parametric Substance material file

Also known as: SBSAR file · Substance archive · .sbsar · Substance material file · Substance Designer publish

Definition

An SBSAR is a published Substance file, a compiled version of a Substance Designer graph that keeps its exposed parameters. It generates texture maps on demand, so you can change values such as color, wear, scale and pattern without opening the graph. SBSARs are used in Substance Painter, in Substance Designer and in engines and tools with Substance support, and Adobe's Substance 3D Assets library is delivered in this format.

In production

Expose only the parameters artists need, name them clearly and set sensible ranges, and test the SBSAR in Painter before sharing it. For shipping games, most teams bake the result to bitmaps, because runtime generation costs time and not every platform supports it. The SBSAR is a good way to hand a material to others and to keep one source for many variations.
