Freelancing in Game Art
Working for studios and clients on a project basis
Also known as: Freelance 3D artist · Freelance game artist · Contract artist · Freelance concept artist · Freelancer game art
Definition
Freelancing in game art means working for studios and clients on a project or contract basis, instead of as a full-time employee. Freelancers make assets, concepts and effects for indie teams, outsourcing studios and marketplaces, and manage their own time, clients and business. It gives flexibility and variety, but requires finding work, communicating clearly, estimating time and handling contracts and payments. A strong portfolio with a clear specialization and a track record of delivering on time is what brings clients.
In production
Define the scope, deliverables, revisions, deadline and payment in writing before starting, and agree on the format, naming and technical requirements of the assets. Quote with a margin for changes, ask for a deposit, and keep the work organized with clear file versions. Start with small jobs, and build relationships: repeat clients and recommendations bring most of the work. Be clear about rights and credit for the work you make.
