DynaMesh Losing Detail in ZBrush

Fine detail disappears after remeshing

Also known as: ZBrush Dynamesh lost detail · ZBrush dynamesh resolution · ZBrush dynamesh blurry · ZBrush dynamesh project · Dynamesh smooth detail

Quick answer

DynaMesh loses detail when its Resolution is too low for the sculpt, because the new, evenly spaced polygons cannot hold the old detail. Raise the Resolution slider in the DynaMesh settings and remesh again, and turn on Project so ZBrush projects the previous shape onto the new mesh. Use DynaMesh only in the early block-out stage and move to subdivision levels for fine detail.

How to fix it

Remesh at a resolution that matches the current stage: low for big forms and higher as the sculpt is refined. When the forms are settled, use ZRemesher to build clean topology, subdivide, and use Project All from a copy of the old mesh to bring the detail back. Check that Groups and Polish are set as you want, since Polish can soften detail. Keep a copy of the sculpt before big remeshes.
