Art Director and Lead Roles
Who decides the look and who manages the team
Also known as: Art director · Lead artist · Technical art director · Art lead · Game art management · Producer art
Definition
An art director sets and protects the visual vision of a game, deciding its style, mood and quality bar, and approving the work of the team. Lead artists manage a group of artists in a discipline, such as environments or characters, checking quality, giving feedback, planning tasks and solving problems with the pipeline. Producers manage the schedule, budget and communication across the project. A technical art director takes care of the tools and technical standards. Together, they keep the team's work consistent and on time.
In production
Artists meet these roles through reviews, feedback and approvals, so understanding what they look for helps you work well with them: a clear style guide, consistent quality and delivery on time. The path to a lead role goes through strong craft, communication and the ability to mentor others, not only personal skill. Artists who like people and planning grow into leads, and others stay as senior or principal artists.
