Texture Import Settings

How Unity processes an imported texture

Also known as: Unity texture inspector · Max Size · Aniso Level · Generate Mip Maps · Texture Type Unity

Definition

Texture import settings are the options in Unity's texture inspector that control how an image is processed for the game. The key ones are Texture Type, such as Default, Normal map or Sprite, sRGB (Color Texture), Generate Mip Maps, Aniso Level, Filter Mode, Max Size and the compression format for each platform. They decide how much memory a texture uses and how sharp it looks, so wrong values are a common cause of blurry, dark or wrong-looking surfaces.

In production

Set Texture Type to Normal map for normals, turn sRGB off for roughness, metallic and mask textures, and keep Generate Mip Maps on for 3D objects. Choose Max Size by the size the texture covers on screen, not by the source file, and compress for the target platform. Use presets so every texture in a folder imports consistently, and review them in the Memory Profiler when a build gets heavy.
