Flood Fill

Designer node that identifies each shape

Also known as: Substance Designer Flood Fill · Flood Fill to Random Grayscale · Flood Fill Bounding Box · Designer shape mask · Designer per-shape random

Definition

Flood Fill is a Substance Designer node that detects each separate shape in a black and white mask and gives each one its own information. Companion nodes read its output to create a random gray value for each shape, a gradient across each shape, the bounding box or the center of each. This lets you vary height, color or roughness per stone, tile or leaf, and is the key to realistic variation in procedural materials.

In production

Create a mask of the shapes, for example from a Tile Sampler, run it through a Flood Fill, and then use Flood Fill to Random Grayscale to vary values per shape. Use the bounding box output to scale or rotate each shape by itself. Check that the shapes do not touch, since touching shapes merge into one. It is a staple of rock, brick and tile materials.
