Fill Layer

Layer that fills a texture set with channel values

Also known as: Substance Painter fill layer · Painter fill · Material layer · Fill with mask

Definition

A fill layer in Substance Painter is a layer that fills the whole texture set, or the part not hidden by its mask, with values or textures for each channel, such as base color, roughness, metallic and normal. Fill layers are the base of material-based texturing, where each material, like paint, bare metal or dirt, is one fill layer controlled by a mask. A fill layer can use a projection mode, tiling and procedural effects, and stack with others.

In production

Use a fill layer for every material and add a black mask to control where it appears, with generators and paint to shape the mask. Keep layers named and in folders so the stack stays readable. Adjust the UV tiling on the layer rather than the texture, and set the projection to match the material. Painting on a fill layer directly changes all of its channels, so use the mask for most edits.
