# Project Context

The Death Knight is a boss-tier enemy character created for Seeker of the Ancients. The goal was to create a menacing, stylized undead warrior that reads as dangerous from gameplay distance while holding up under cinematic close-ups. The entire pipeline was documented in the video above.

# Concept and References

The design started with a mood board mixing dark fantasy armor references (medieval plate, gothic cathedral ornamentation) with undead anatomy references (exposed bone, decayed flesh, glowing energy). The shape language was driven by sharp, downward-pointing forms to communicate threat and weight.

Key design decisions:

  • Oversized pauldrons and gauntlets to create a wide, top-heavy silhouette that reads as imposing
  • Exposed ribcage and spine visible through gaps in the armor to sell the undead nature
  • Glowing eyes and runic energy as the primary emissive focal point, drawing the player's eye to the head
  • Tattered cape for secondary motion and silhouette breakup during animation

# High-Poly Sculpt in ZBrush

The sculpt was built in ZBrush using a modular subtool approach:

  • Body base: Started from a stylized male basemesh, then pushed proportions wider and taller. Removed muscle definition to flatten the undead anatomy.
  • Armor pieces: Each plate was sculpted as a separate subtool. Used ZModeler for the base hard-surface forms, then added wear, dents, and edge damage with the Trim Dynamic and Dam Standard brushes.
  • Skull and bones: Sculpted with anatomical accuracy first, then stylized by exaggerating the brow ridge, jaw, and cheekbones for a more aggressive read.
  • Cape and cloth: Blocked out with Move brush for large folds, then refined with cloth-specific alphas for weave and fraying edges.

Total high-poly: approximately 12 million polygons across all subtools.

# Retopology and UVs in Blender

The game-ready mesh was built in Blender at 28,000 triangles:

  • Manual retopology using RetopoFlow for organic sections (body, skull, cape)
  • Clean quad flow along armor edges for proper normal map baking
  • UV layout split into 3 UDIM tiles: body/bones, armor, cape/accessories
  • Each tile targets 2048x2048 final resolution

# Texturing in Substance Painter

  • Substance Painter* handled the full texturing pass:
  • Metal armor: Started with a steel smart material, then hand-painted corrosion, blood stains, and edge scratches. Used curvature-driven generators for automatic edge highlighting.
  • Bone and flesh: Hand-painted base with warm yellows and cold grey-greens. AO-driven cavity darkening. Subtle subsurface color shifts baked into the diffuse.
  • Emissive runes: Painted as a separate channel with animated UV scrolling planned for in-engine. The rune patterns were designed as tileable strips that wrap along armor grooves.
  • Cape: Layered fabric weave with directional wear along fold lines and frayed edges using opacity masks.

# Rendering and Presentation

Final presentation renders were created in Marmoset Toolbag with a three-light setup:

  • Cool blue key light from above-left to emphasize the cold, undead atmosphere
  • Warm orange rim light from behind to separate the character from the dark background
  • Subtle fill from below to catch the underside of armor plates

# Lessons Learned

  • Silhouette checks saved hours: We caught proportion issues early by checking the silhouette at thumbnail scale after every major sculpting session
  • Modular subtools = flexible iteration: When the art director wanted wider pauldrons, we adjusted one subtool without touching the rest
  • Emissive placement matters: The glowing runes were repositioned three times before finding the arrangement that guided the eye correctly from gameplay camera distance
