A stylized fantasy forest built for Seeker of the Ancients. Breakdown of mood targets, foliage workflow, and lighting decisions that shape exploration.

Fantasy Forest

# Project Context

This scene was designed as a transition area between safe exploration space and a higher-threat route in Seeker of the Ancients. The goal was to make the forest feel magical and readable at gameplay speed, while still holding up in portfolio closeups.

# Visual Direction

We focused on three art direction pillars:

  • Layered Depth: foreground silhouettes, mid-ground landmarks, and soft background shapes.
  • Color Contrast: cool ambient tones with selective warm accents for navigation.
  • Shape Language: exaggerated trunks and clustered canopies to keep a stylized identity.

# Environment Workflow

The blockout started in Blender with a simple composition pass to lock camera angles and path readability. Hero trees and roots were refined for stronger silhouettes, then the set was assembled in Unreal Engine 5 for lighting and atmosphere iteration.

For foliage, we combined reusable trunk modules with card-based leaf clusters. Instead of high-density leaves, we used a custom "fluffy normal" approach to fake volume and keep rendering cost stable.

# Lighting and Atmosphere

Lighting was treated as the main storytelling tool:

  • Cool skylight for overall mood
  • Local warm pools near landmarks and path turns
  • Fog cards + volumetric fog for depth separation
  • Subtle rim lighting to make hero shapes read against dark backgrounds

This helped direct the player's eye without obvious UI guidance.

# Materials and Detail Pass

Terrain and props were textured in Substance Painter with stylized roughness balance to avoid noisy reflections. Small moss and dirt breakup layers were added to prevent flat surfaces, especially around roots and stone edges.

# Performance Notes

To keep the scene game-ready, we prioritized:

  • Instanced foliage for repeated assets
  • Controlled overdraw in dense canopy zones
  • Fewer unique materials, more material instances
  • LOD tuning on mid/far vegetation

# Final Result

The final forest reads clearly from both gameplay and cinematic viewpoints, supports exploration pacing, and establishes a strong fantasy mood consistent with the world of the project.
