ZBrush Symmetry Not Working
Strokes only appear on one side
Also known as: ZBrush symmetry off · ZBrush X key symmetry · ZBrush local symmetry · ZBrush symmetry axis · ZBrush mirror not working
Quick answer
To turn symmetry on in ZBrush, press X or open the Transform palette and click Activate Symmetry, then choose the X, Y or Z axis. If it still does not mirror strokes, the model is probably not centered on its axis or has been moved or rotated after it was made. Turn on Local Symmetry in the Transform palette so symmetry follows the model, or reset its position, and check that you are sculpting a mesh that is actually symmetrical.
How to fix it
Symmetry works for meshes that share topology on both sides, so a model made from a mirrored, symmetrical base works best. After Dynamesh or ZRemesher the topology may be lost, but symmetry in sculpting still works as long as the shape is centered. If a SubTool was transformed, use Tool > Geometry > Mirror And Weld or reset its position with Transform. Radial symmetry is a separate option for repeated shapes.
