Three-Point Lighting

Key, fill and rim light setup

Also known as: 3 point lighting · Three point light setup · Key light fill light rim light · Studio lighting 3D · Portfolio lighting

Definition

Three-point lighting is a classic setup of three lights that makes a subject read clearly. The key light is the strongest and sets the main direction and shadows, usually placed to one side and above the camera. The fill light is softer and on the opposite side, lifting the shadows so they are not too dark. The rim or back light sits behind the subject and traces its edges, separating it from the background.

In production

Start with the key light only, then add the fill at half the strength or less, and finally the rim light. Use color differences, such as a warm key and a cool rim, for depth. It is a base for turntables, character shots and asset presentations in Blender, Marmoset Toolbag or Unreal Engine, and then adjusted for the style of the project. Too much fill makes a render look flat.
