Solidify Modifier

Adds thickness to a surface

Also known as: Blender solidify · Blender thickness · Blender add thickness to plane · Blender solidify modifier

Definition

The Solidify modifier gives a surface thickness by extruding it along its normals and closing the edges. It turns planes and open shells into solid objects, such as walls, cloth, armor plates, leaves and paper. Thickness sets how thick it is, Offset sets the direction relative to the original surface, and Even Thickness keeps the width consistent on curved parts. A negative thickness makes it grow inward.

In production

Use Solidify before Bevel or Subdivision so the new edges are smoothed as well. Check the normals first, since a surface with flipped normals thickens in the wrong direction. For game assets, giving thin props real thickness avoids two-sided material problems and light leaks. Apply the modifier before export, and keep an eye on the polygon count on dense meshes.
