Landscape Texture Tiling Visible
Repeating patterns on terrain from a distance
Also known as: Landscape tiling Unreal · Terrain texture repeating · Landscape material tiling · Terrain tiling fix · Unreal landscape layer blend · Landscape macro variation
Quick answer
Landscape textures show tiling when the same texture repeats at one scale across a large area. Sample each layer at two or more different scales and blend them with distance, add a large, low-frequency macro variation texture that changes the color and brightness across the terrain, use noise to break up the edges between layers, and rotate or offset the samples. Layer Blend nodes with height-based blending also help hide repetition.
How to fix it
In Unreal Engine's landscape material, build a reusable function for the layers with near and far tiling and a macro mask, and keep the number of texture samples in check, since many layers cost a lot. Runtime Virtual Texturing can cache the result and blend meshes into the terrain. Check the landscape at gameplay height and at overview distance, where patterns show most.
