Environment Storytelling
Telling the story of a place through its objects
Also known as: Environmental storytelling · Storytelling environment art · Visual storytelling level · Narrative environment · Show dont tell environment
Definition
Environment storytelling is the practice of conveying story and information through the objects, layout and state of a space instead of through text or dialogue. A campfire with two cups, a barricaded door, a trail of blood or a child's drawing on a wall tell the player who was here and what happened. It adds depth and mood to a world, rewards exploration and guides players without interrupting the gameplay.
In production
Decide the story of a space before dressing it: who lived or fought there, when and what changed. Add clear, readable clues in the layout, props, damage, lighting and color, and keep a few strong storytelling moments instead of covering every corner. Check from the player's path that clues are seen at the right time. Concept art, mood boards and a color script help to define the story visually.
