Photoshop

Adobe's flagship image editing software and the gold standard for 2D work in game development. Used for concept art, matte painting, texture retouching, UI/UX mockups, and marketing materials. Features advanced layer compositing, adjustment layers, generative AI tools, and seamless integration with Substance 3D suite. Essential skill for environment artists, concept artists, and texture painters.

Best For

Hand-painted texture creation, photo texture manipulation, and final touch-up of exported game texture maps.

Primary Use Cases

  • - Painting stylized diffuse textures for hand-painted game art using custom brush sets
  • - Color-correcting and compositing photo references into tileable surface textures for environment art
  • - Post-processing normal and AO maps exported from Substance Painter — levels, curves, and channel edits
  • - Creating alpha channel masks, trim textures, and decal sheets for in-engine overlay materials
  • - Designing UI mockups, concept color scripts, and material ID reference sheets for production communication

Pros & Cons for Game Art

Pros

  • + Unmatched brush engine and custom brush creation — still the gold standard for hand-painted texture styles
  • + Universal file format support — every tool in the game art pipeline can import and export PSD or PNG via Photoshop
  • + Enormous library of community tutorials specifically for game texture creation
  • + Non-destructive adjustment layers and smart objects make iterative texture revision fast and clean
  • + Industry-expected skill — familiarity with Photoshop tools is assumed in most game art team environments

Cons

  • − Adobe subscription is expensive, especially for students who also pay for Substance tools in the same ecosystem
  • − No native 3D UV projection or mesh painting — requires external tools for any on-surface texture work
  • − Performance lags on very large (8K+) texture files with many layers on older hardware
  • − Krita offers comparable functionality for hand-painting at no cost, making Photoshop harder to justify for brush work alone

Suggested Learning Path

  1. 1.Learn layers, blending modes, and selection tools — the foundation for all texture manipulation work
  2. 2.Study custom brush creation and tablet pressure sensitivity settings for natural hand-painted strokes
  3. 3.Practice creating seamless tileable textures using the Offset filter and clone stamp workflow
  4. 4.Learn channel manipulation — isolate and edit R, G, B, A channels independently to fix normal map errors
  5. 5.Build a template PSD with layer groups for each texture map (albedo, roughness, metallic) to stay organized across assets

Quick Tip

Use Filter > Other > High Pass on a duplicated diffuse layer (set to Overlay blending mode) to quickly add micro surface detail and sharpness to hand-painted textures that are reading as too flat without muddying the base colors.

Setup Notes

  • - Set Color Settings to Monitor RGB and disable color management when working on game textures — engines read raw RGB values, and ICC profile conversion will corrupt your roughness and metallic maps
  • - Create a custom workspace with the Channels, History, and Properties panels always visible — channel-level editing is essential for normal map correction and mask work
  • - Install a game-art-specific brush pack and assign pressure-sensitive shortcuts on your tablet's express keys for paint efficiency
  • - Enable "Snap Vector Tools and Transforms to Pixel Grid" in Preferences to keep hard-edge decal and UI assets pixel-crisp

How N-hance Uses It

N-hance Studio uses Photoshop selectively for photo-sourced texture preparation and final map adjustments — particularly for correcting normal map seams, creating alpha-channel trim sheets, and compositing concept color reference documents for client approval.
