Dynamic Subdivision
Smoothed preview without extra polygons
Also known as: ZBrush Dynamic Subdiv · ZBrush Shift D · ZBrush Dynamic Subdivision · ZBrush smooth preview · ZBrush crease
Definition
Dynamic Subdivision is a ZBrush display mode that previews a smoothed, subdivided version of a low-poly mesh without actually adding polygons to it. It is switched on in the Geometry palette, with the shortcut Shift+D, and the result updates live as you edit the low-poly. It is mainly used with ZModeler and with creases, where you shape a low-poly model and see the smooth, high-resolution result at the same time.
In production
Use it for hard-surface and clean modeling workflows where the low-poly stays editable, and set creases on edges that should stay sharp. When you are happy with the result, apply it, or divide the mesh, to make the smoothed version into real polygons for sculpting. It does not replace subdivision levels for sculpting, and it can be heavy on dense meshes.
