Particles Disappear When the Camera Turns

Effects vanish at the edge of the screen

Also known as: Niagara bounds · Niagara fixed bounds · Particles disappear camera angle · Unity particle culling mode · Particle system pops out · Effect disappears off screen

Quick answer

Particles disappear when the camera looks away or turns because the engine culls the effect using its bounds, and the bounds do not cover where the particles really are. In Niagara, set Fixed Bounds in the system or emitter properties to a box that covers the whole effect. In Unity, set the Particle System's Culling Mode to Always Simulate or give it a larger custom bounds, so the effect keeps running and drawing correctly.

How to fix it

Large or fast-moving effects, GPU particles and effects with a big spread are the most affected, since their automatically calculated bounds lag behind the real shape. Make the bounds only as big as needed, because a huge box is drawn and simulated more often than necessary. Check the effect from several camera angles and at the screen edges, and test with the effect attached to moving objects.
