Normal Map Compression Settings in Unreal

Why Unreal textures look blocky or wrong

Also known as: TC_Normalmap · Normalmap compression · Masks no sRGB · Texture compression settings Unreal · Unreal normal map looks wrong

Quick answer

If a normal map or packed texture looks wrong in Unreal Engine, check its Compression Settings. Normal maps should use Normalmap, which Unreal usually picks from the file name, and packed data maps such as ORM should use Masks (no sRGB) or have sRGB switched off. A normal map left on Default compression gives blocky, incorrect lighting, and sRGB left on for a data map shifts every value.

How to fix it

Open the texture, set Compression Settings, untick sRGB for non-color maps, and keep names consistent (T_Name_N for normals, T_Name_ORM for packed maps) so import settings are guessed correctly. Base color maps keep sRGB on and use the default compression. If a normal map still looks inverted after this, the green channel convention is the next suspect, not the compression.
