Muddy Colors in Digital Painting
Dull, grey-brown colors after painting
Also known as: Muddy colors · Muddy palette · Dull colors painting · Colors look dirty · Color mixing problem digital · Desaturated painting
Quick answer
Colors turn muddy when too many hues are mixed together, or when opposite colors are blended in equal amounts, which cancels the color into a dull gray-brown. Limit the palette to a few main colors, choose one dominant hue and one or two accents, and keep temperature shifts, warm light and cool shadow, instead of darkening with gray or black. Paint shadows with a saturated, shifted hue rather than adding black.
How to fix it
Pick colors on separate layers and avoid heavy blending and smudging with the color picker, which averages colors into mud. Use a limited palette as a swatch, and check that saturation is controlled: the most saturated color should be at the focal point. Remember that color on a screen mixes by light, so look at the whole image at a small size to see whether the palette holds together.
