Direction of polygon edges across a surface
Definition
Edge flow describes the directional pattern of edges across a mesh surface — how loops curve, where they converge, and how they relate to the form's underlying anatomy or function. Good edge flow follows the natural lines of force: muscle bundles on a character, panel breaks on a vehicle, structural framing on architecture. It is the topology equivalent of composition in 2D art — invisible when correct, glaringly wrong when broken.
In production
In Maya or Blender, edge flow is checked interactively by enabling the wireframe overlay and rotating the model to confirm loops curve continuously across joints and facial landmarks rather than breaking into random triangulated patches. Character topology follows well-documented reference loops — the classic "face loop" diagrams show edges radiating around the eyes and mouth like real facial muscles, which is why deforming a poorly-flowed face produces pinching at the corners of the mouth during a smile blend shape. Retopology tools like ZBrush's ZRemesher or Maya's Quad Draw let artists manually guide edge flow with painted curve guides before the automatic retopo pass runs, since fully automatic retopology often produces technically clean quads that still ignore the model's actual anatomy. Hard-surface edge flow follows a different rule than organic edge flow: instead of following muscle direction, edges follow manufactured seams and panel breaks.
