Blender Grease Pencil: The Arcane Style Guide

How to combine 3D models with 2D hand-drawn animation effects to achieve that painterly "Arcane" look in Blender.

Blender Grease Pencil: The Arcane Style Guide

# Why Arcane Changed Everything

When Fortiche Production released Arcane for Riot Games, the animation industry took notice. The show's visual style is not purely 3D or purely 2D. It is a hybrid: 3D characters and environments rendered with painterly shading, overlaid with hand-drawn effects, brush stroke textures, and 2D animation accents. The result feels like a moving painting.

Blender's Grease Pencil is the most accessible tool for independent artists to explore this hybrid approach. Here is how to get started.

# Understanding the Arcane Look

The Arcane style has several distinct visual layers:

  • 3D base geometry with toon/cel shading and carefully art-directed lighting
  • Painted textures that avoid photorealistic detail in favor of visible brush strokes and color variation
  • 2D overlay effects: smoke, fire, magic particles, impact lines, and speed streaks drawn by hand
  • Compositing passes: chromatic aberration, film grain, vignette, and color grading that unify the 3D and 2D elements
  • Intentional imperfection: lines that wobble, colors that bleed outside edges, textures that shift frame-to-frame to mimic hand-painted animation

# Setting Up Blender for Hybrid Work

  • Rendering*: Use EEVEE for real-time feedback. Cycles is unnecessary for stylized work and will slow your iteration speed dramatically.
  • Shader setup for toon shading*:
  • Use a Shader to RGB node to convert the lighting into flat color bands
  • Feed the result into a ColorRamp with 2-3 hard stops to create cel-shading bands
  • Add a Fresnel rim light controlled by a separate ColorRamp for edge glow
  • Mix in a hand-painted texture as the base color instead of a flat color for that painterly feel
  • Outline setup*:
  • Enable Freestyle in the render settings for automatic edge lines
  • Alternatively, use the Solidify modifier with flipped normals and a black material for thicker, more controllable outlines
  • Grease Pencil line art modifier can also extract outlines from 3D meshes in real-time

# Grease Pencil: The 2D Layer

Grease Pencil objects in Blender are full 2D drawing layers that exist in 3D space. This is what makes the hybrid approach possible:

  • Drawing VFX accents*:
  • Create a new Grease Pencil object in front of your 3D character
  • Use the Draw tool with a textured brush (import a charcoal or ink brush from a Grease Pencil asset pack)
  • Draw impact lines, energy trails, smoke wisps, or magical effects frame by frame
  • Parent the Grease Pencil object to the 3D character so it moves with animations
  • Key Grease Pencil features for this workflow*:
  • Onion Skinning: See previous and next frames while drawing for smooth motion
  • Interpolation: Blender can auto-interpolate between key drawings for faster workflow
  • Modifiers: Apply noise, thickness variation, and tint modifiers to Grease Pencil strokes for organic, hand-drawn feel
  • Materials: Grease Pencil strokes support multiple materials with different colors, textures, and blend modes

# Compositing: Bringing It Together

The final step unifies the 3D render and 2D overlays:

  • Render the 3D scene and Grease Pencil layers as separate passes
  • In the Compositor, combine them with Add or Screen blend modes for glowing effects
  • Add Glare node for bloom on emissive areas
  • Apply subtle Lens Distortion for chromatic aberration
  • Use a Color Balance node to push the overall palette toward the warm amber and cool teal tones Arcane is known for
  • Add film grain with the Noise Texture node mixed at low opacity

# Practical Exercise: Animated Magic Effect

Try this 30-minute exercise to test the workflow:

1. Model or download a simple stylized character bust

2. Apply the toon shader setup described above

3. Create a Grease Pencil object and draw 5 frames of a swirling energy effect around the character's hand

4. Add a glow pass in compositing

5. Render a short loop

Even this simple test will demonstrate how powerful the 3D + 2D combination feels compared to either approach alone.

# Limitations and Workarounds

  • Frame-by-frame is slow: For long sequences, use Grease Pencil interpolation and modifiers to reduce the number of manually drawn frames
  • Depth sorting: Grease Pencil objects can clip through 3D geometry. Use the "In Front" display option or careful parenting to manage depth
  • Performance: Dense Grease Pencil strokes can slow down the viewport. Keep stroke counts reasonable and use simplify modifiers for dense effects

# Why This Matters

The Arcane style proved that audiences love the hybrid look. Riot's success has pushed studios large and small to explore similar approaches. For indie artists and small teams, Blender's Grease Pencil is the only free tool that integrates 2D and 3D in a single application. Learning this workflow now positions you for a growing market.
