TAA Ghosting and Blur

Smearing trails and soft images from temporal anti-aliasing

Also known as: TAA ghosting · TAA blurry · Temporal anti-aliasing smear · Unreal TAA ghosting · Unity TAA blur · Ghosting foliage TAA

Quick answer

TAA ghosting and blur come from temporal anti-aliasing blending the current frame with earlier ones, which smears moving or animated things that do not report their motion correctly. Make sure materials with vertex animation, such as foliage wind, output correct motion vectors, avoid very thin, high-contrast details, and raise the render resolution or use an upscaler such as TSR, DLSS or FSR. Switching to another anti-aliasing method is the quick test.

How to fix it

Check whether the ghosting follows moving objects, translucent surfaces or particles, since those often lack motion vectors and smear. Lower sharpening and strong post-processing, which can exaggerate the effect, and keep frame rates stable, as low frame rates make trails longer. If a project must stay sharp and clean, MSAA in forward rendering or SMAA avoids temporal artifacts, at the cost of other aliasing.
