Static Batching
Combine non-moving meshes to cut draw calls
Also known as: Batching Static · Unity static batching · Dynamic batching · Mesh batching
Definition
Static batching is a Unity optimization that combines the meshes of objects that never move into larger batches at build time, so the GPU draws them in fewer draw calls. You enable it by marking objects Batching Static. It uses more memory because the combined geometry is stored, and it only works for objects that share a material. Dynamic batching does a similar thing at runtime for very small meshes and is rarely useful today.
In production
Mark scenery such as walls, props and terrain details as Batching Static, and keep one material across many objects with a texture atlas or trim sheet. With the SRP Batcher the gain is smaller, so profile before relying on it. GPU instancing is the better tool for many copies of the same mesh, while static batching helps with many different meshes that share a material.
