Characters & Bosses
3 images
An early rock-golem boss character, shown here with its render process alongside the finished piece — a look at how a chunky, stone-plated silhouette gets pushed from rough sculpt to final presentation render. Boss characters carry different design constraints than regular enemies: silhouette needs to read instantly as a threat from across an arena, and the surface language (in this case cracked, plated rock) needs to hold up under dramatic, high-contrast lighting rather than the flatter lighting typical of standard environment art. The included process shot documents that iteration rather than hiding it.
Three images track the golem across a hex-lit render variant, a standard presentation render, and a dedicated process shot showing the underlying sculpt. Presenting two different lighting variants of the same finished sculpt — rather than only the single "best" render — highlights how much a boss character's perceived threat level shifts with lighting choice alone, a lesson carried directly into the character-focused work in the 3D Character Artist course. It's one of only two pieces filed under Characters & Bosses, the smallest category in the gallery, since most of the portfolio here leans environment- and prop-heavy rather than character-first — a balance that mirrors how most working environment artists spend their own production time.
